Rinse the rice until the water runs mostly clear
Put the rice in a microwave-safe bowl
Add water using a 1:2 ratio for white rice or about 1:2.5 for brown rice
Add a pinch of salt if desired
Cover the bowl with a microwave-safe lid or plate, leaving a small vent
Microwave on high for 10 minutes
Stir the rice
Microwave on medium or high for 5 to 10 more minutes until the water is absorbed
Let the rice sit covered for 5 minutes
Fluff with a fork before serving
