If you are a veteran, request a copy through the National Archives eVetRecs system

Submit Standard Form 180 to the National Personnel Records Center

Contact your branch of service’s personnel records office if you are still serving or recently separated

Check your online military personnel account or separation portal if available

Contact the county veterans service office for help submitting the request

If you are the next of kin of a deceased veteran, submit the request with proof of relationship and death

Provide your full name, service number or Social Security number, branch, dates of service, and date of birth

Include your signature and any required identification or supporting documents

Request a certified copy if you need it for benefits or legal purposes

Follow up with the records office if you do not receive a response within the expected processing time
