Place the can on a stable, flat surface
Open the handles of the can opener
Position the cutting wheel on the rim of the can
Align the blade just inside the edge of the lid
Squeeze the handles together to puncture the lid
Turn the knob or rotate the handle to move the opener around the can
Keep the opener steady as it cuts along the rim
Continue rotating until the lid is fully detached
Release the handles and remove the opener
Lift off the lid carefully
Dispose of the lid safely
