Remove or tape off hardware, hinges, and nearby surfaces
Clean the door thoroughly with soap and water
Let the door dry completely
Sand the surface lightly to remove gloss and smooth imperfections
Wipe away dust with a tack cloth or damp cloth
Apply painter’s tape around edges and trim
Use a primer if needed, especially on bare wood, metal, or stained surfaces
Stir the paint well before use
Start painting the panels, then rails and stiles, then the outer edges
Use a high-quality brush or foam roller for a smooth finish
Apply thin, even coats
Let the first coat dry fully
Apply a second coat if needed
Remove tape before the paint fully hardens
Reinstall hardware after the paint cures
Keep the door open or slightly ajar while drying to prevent sticking
