Look for a symmetrical shape and a consistent rind thickness
Choose a firm watermelon with no soft spots, dents, bruises, or cracks
Check the rind’s surface: it should look dull or matte, not shiny
Find the field spot (yellow underside): choose one that is creamy yellow or deep yellow
Avoid very pale white or greenish field spots
Look for webbing or “sugar” spots (tan/brown web-like marks) on the rind
Pick the heaviest watermelon for its size
Listen for a deep, hollow sound when tapped with your knuckles
Check the stem area: a dry, browned stem is a good sign
Avoid watermelons with leaking liquid or a fermented/sour smell
If possible, select watermelons with uniform color from end to end
Store whole at room temperature briefly, then refrigerate once cut
