Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil
Clear the planting area of weeds and debris
Test and amend the soil if needed
Dig a trench about 6 to 8 inches deep and 12 inches wide
Space trenches or rows about 3 to 5 feet apart
Soak asparagus crowns in water for 10 to 20 minutes before planting
Place crowns in the trench with roots spread out
Space crowns 12 to 18 inches apart
Cover crowns with 2 to 3 inches of soil
Water thoroughly after planting
Add more soil gradually as shoots grow until the trench is filled
Keep the bed evenly moist during the first growing season
Mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds
Avoid harvesting spears during the first year
Remove weeds regularly
Fertilize lightly in spring if needed
