Remove weeds, grass, rocks, and debris from the planting area
Install a trellis, arbor, or support system before planting
Choose grape varieties suited to your climate and purpose
Plant dormant bare-root vines in early spring
Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots comfortably
Place the vine in the hole with the graft union above soil level if applicable
Spread the roots out evenly in the hole
Backfill with soil and gently firm it around the roots
Water thoroughly after planting
Space vines according to variety and support system
Mulch lightly around the base, keeping mulch away from the trunk
Prune the vine back to one or two strong buds after planting
Water regularly during the first growing season
Train the strongest shoot to the support system
Remove weak or competing shoots as the vine grows
Fertilize only if soil tests show a need
Protect young vines from pests, animals, and extreme weather
Continue pruning annually during dormancy for healthy growth and fruit production
