Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil
Remove weeds, rocks, and debris from the planting area
Work compost or aged manure into the soil
Test soil pH and adjust to about 5.5 to 6.5
Dig holes wide enough to spread the roots
Place each plant so the crown sits at soil level
Spread the roots out in the hole
Fill the hole with soil and press gently around the plant
Space plants about 12 to 18 inches apart
Space rows about 2 to 3 feet apart
Water thoroughly after planting
Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds
Keep the crown above the mulch
Remove flowers during the first few weeks after planting
Water regularly to keep soil evenly moist
Fertilize lightly after plants are established
