Choose a beef steak cut
Pat the steak dry
Season both sides with salt and pepper
Let the steak rest at room temperature for 20 to 30 minutes
Heat a skillet, grill, or pan over high heat
Add a small amount of oil if using a pan
Place the steak on the hot surface
Cook without moving it for a few minutes
Flip the steak and cook the other side
Add butter, garlic, or herbs if desired
Check the internal temperature for desired doneness
Remove the steak from heat
Let the steak rest for 5 to 10 minutes
Slice against the grain
Serve immediately
