How to Prepare for MRI?

Follow all instructions from your doctor or imaging center

Tell the staff if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant

Inform them about any metal implants, pacemakers, clips, shrapnel, or medical devices

Report any allergies, kidney problems, or prior reactions to contrast dye

Remove all jewelry, piercings, watches, hairpins, and metal accessories

Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal zippers, buttons, or snaps

Avoid makeup, hairspray, or lotions if instructed by the facility

Bring your insurance card, ID, and any required paperwork

Bring previous imaging studies or medical records if requested

Follow fasting or drinking instructions if contrast or sedation is planned

Take prescribed medications unless told otherwise

Arrive early to complete screening forms

Tell the technologist if you have claustrophobia or anxiety

Ask about sedation or an open MRI if needed

Empty your pockets and leave valuables at home

Remove hearing aids, dentures, glasses, and removable dental work if instructed

Follow any specific instructions for children or for MRI of a certain body part
