How to Do an EKG?

Verify the order and patient identity

Perform hand hygiene

Gather the EKG machine, electrodes, and supplies

Explain the procedure to the patient

Ensure patient privacy and proper exposure of the chest, arms, and legs

Have the patient lie flat or as tolerated

Ask the patient to remain still and relax

Clean and dry the skin where electrodes will be placed

Remove excess hair if needed for good electrode contact

Place the limb electrodes on both wrists and both ankles or on the appropriate proximal limb sites

Place the chest electrodes in the correct V1 to V6 positions

Confirm all electrodes are securely attached

Check that lead wires are connected correctly

Instruct the patient to stay still and not talk

Acquire the EKG tracing

Check the tracing for quality and repeat if needed

Label the tracing with patient information, date, and time

Remove the electrodes and clean the patient’s skin

Dispose of supplies appropriately

Document the procedure and report any abnormal findings
