Sort through the pinto beans and remove any debris or damaged beans
Rinse the beans thoroughly under cold water
Soak the beans overnight in water, or use a quick-soak method if desired
Drain and rinse the beans after soaking
Place the beans in the Crock-Pot
Add fresh water or broth to cover the beans by about 2 inches
Add salt, if using, after the beans begin to soften
Add optional seasonings such as onion, garlic, bay leaves, or pepper
Cover the Crock-Pot with the lid
Cook on low for 7 to 8 hours or on high for 4 to 5 hours
Check the beans for tenderness near the end of cooking
Add more liquid if needed during cooking
Stir occasionally if desired
Remove bay leaves before serving
Drain excess liquid if needed
Serve the beans warm
