Fill a saucepan with 2–3 inches of water
Bring the water to a gentle simmer
Add a splash of vinegar if desired
Crack each egg into a small bowl or cup
Stir the water to create a gentle whirlpool
Slide the egg into the center of the water
Repeat with additional eggs, keeping them spaced apart
Cook for 3–4 minutes for a runny yolk
Cook longer for a firmer yolk
Remove the eggs with a slotted spoon
Drain on paper towels
Serve immediately
