Write the date in the top right corner
Write the payee’s name on the line that says “Pay to the order of”
Write the payment amount in numbers in the box on the right
Write the payment amount in words on the line below the payee’s name
If needed, write cents as a fraction after the dollar amount in words
Draw a line through any unused space after the written amount
Sign the check on the signature line in the bottom right corner
Fill in the memo line if you want to note the purpose of the payment
Make sure the written amount matches the numeric amount
Keep a record of the check for your records
