Set the multimeter to the correct function
Select AC or DC if measuring voltage
Choose a range if the meter is not auto-ranging
Insert the black probe into COM
Insert the red probe into the correct input jack
Touch the probes to the circuit or component
Read the value shown on the display
Check the unit symbol on the screen
Use the correct scale for volts, amps, or ohms
For resistance, measure with power off
For continuity, look for a beep or low resistance
For current, connect the meter in series
Remove probes after reading
Turn the meter off when finished
