How to Read a PPD?

Step 1

Check the induration, not the redness

Step 2

Measure the raised, firm swelling in millimeters

Step 3

Read the test 48 to 72 hours after placement

Step 4

Use the correct risk-based cutoff for positivity

Step 5

5 mm positive for highest-risk groups

Step 6

10 mm positive for moderate-risk groups

Step 7

15 mm positive for people with no known risk factors

Step 8

Record the exact millimeter measurement

Step 9

Document the date and time of reading

Step 10

If no induration is present, record 0 mm

Step 11

If the reading is late, do not interpret it as valid

Step 12

Have a trained clinician interpret the result
