Find the zero mark on the ruler
Place the object’s edge at the zero mark
Read the last whole centimeter before the object ends
Count the smaller millimeter marks after that centimeter
Add the millimeters to the whole centimeters
Use the longest marks for centimeters
Use the shorter marks for millimeters
Read the measurement where the object ends
If the object starts after zero, subtract the starting point from the ending point
