Identify the unit of measurement used on the tape
Read the longest marks first
Count the medium marks between whole units
Count the smallest marks for precise measurements
Note the fractional or decimal value at the point being measured
Keep the tape straight and aligned with the object
Read the measurement at eye level
Record the measurement clearly in the correct unit
