Sit or lie down immediately when vertigo starts
Keep your head still and avoid sudden movements
Focus your eyes on a fixed point
Drink water and stay hydrated
Avoid alcohol
Avoid caffeine if it worsens symptoms
Get enough sleep
Rise slowly from sitting or lying positions
Reduce stress and anxiety
Avoid driving or operating machinery during symptoms
Use good lighting and remove tripping hazards
Try vestibular rehabilitation exercises if recommended
Perform the Epley maneuver if your vertigo is from BPPV and a clinician has shown you how
Eat regular meals to avoid low blood sugar
Check with a clinician if medications may be causing vertigo
Seek urgent medical care if vertigo is sudden, severe, or comes with weakness, chest pain, fainting, trouble speaking, or vision changes
