Open the ratchet handle fully until it lies flat
Press the release lever or button, if present
Lift the pawl out of the gear teeth
Pull the strap out of the ratchet slot
Keep fingers clear of the moving parts
Release tension slowly and carefully
Remove the strap completely once slack is free
