Rest and get plenty of sleep
Drink plenty of fluids
Apply a warm compress to the swollen area
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if appropriate
Gargle warm salt water if the swelling is in the neck
Avoid squeezing, massaging, or pressing on the lymph nodes
Treat the underlying cause, such as an infection
Use a humidifier if congestion or throat irritation is present
Eat soft foods if swallowing is painful
Seek medical care if swelling lasts more than a few weeks, gets worse, or is accompanied by fever, night sweats, weight loss, or difficulty breathing or swallowing
