Wash your hands thoroughly
Gather gloves, a towel or absorbent pad, and a syringe if needed
Explain the procedure to the patient and provide privacy
Place the patient in a comfortable position
Put on clean gloves
Place a towel or pad under the patient
Locate the balloon inflation port on the catheter
Attach an empty syringe to the inflation port
Withdraw all fluid from the balloon completely
Confirm the balloon is fully deflated
Gently ask the patient to take a deep breath and relax
Slowly and steadily pull the catheter out
Stop if there is resistance and do not force it
Inspect the catheter to ensure it is intact
Dispose of supplies properly
Clean the area as needed
Monitor for pain, bleeding, or inability to urinate
Seek medical help if the catheter does not come out easily or if there are complications
