Shut down the computer completely
Unplug the power cable
Disconnect all other cables and peripherals
Press and hold the power button for a few seconds to discharge residual power
Open the computer case or drive bay
Locate the hard drive
Disconnect the power cable from the hard drive
Disconnect the data cable from the hard drive
Remove any screws, brackets, or mounting clips securing the drive
Slide or lift the hard drive out of its bay
Place the hard drive in an antistatic bag or safe storage area
