Mark the area around the stump
Check for underground utilities before digging
Cut the stump as low to the ground as possible
Remove any rocks, debris, or loose bark around it
Dig around the stump to expose the roots
Cut the major roots with an axe, saw, or loppers
Rock the stump back and forth to loosen it
Use a shovel, pry bar, or stump puller to lift it out
Remove the stump and as many roots as possible
Fill the hole with soil and tamp it down
Level the area and add grass seed or mulch if needed
