Use fine-tipped tweezers
Grasp the tick as close to the skin’s surface as possible
Pull upward with steady, even pressure
Do not twist, jerk, crush, or squeeze the tick
If mouthparts remain in the skin, leave them alone if they cannot be removed easily
Clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water, alcohol, or iodine
Dispose of the tick by placing it in alcohol, sealing it in a bag, or flushing it
Monitor the bite area and watch for symptoms such as rash, fever, or flu-like illness
Seek medical care if you cannot remove the tick, the bite becomes infected, or symptoms develop
