Apply an over-the-counter antiviral cream such as docosanol as soon as tingling starts
Use a prescription antiviral medicine if available from a clinician
Apply a cold compress for 5 to 10 minutes at a time
Keep the sore clean and dry
Use petroleum jelly to prevent cracking
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed
Avoid touching, picking, or squeezing the sore
Wash hands after any contact with the sore
Avoid kissing and oral sex until fully healed
Avoid sharing cups, utensils, towels, lip balm, or razors
Avoid acidic, salty, or spicy foods if they irritate the sore

See a clinician if sores are severe, frequent, last more than 2 weeks, or affect the eyes
