Dispute inaccurate charge-off information with each credit bureau reporting it
Request validation from the original creditor or debt collector
Check for errors in account balance, dates, payment history, and ownership
Negotiate a pay-for-delete agreement if the creditor or collector agrees in writing
Ask the creditor to update the account if the charge-off was reported incorrectly as unpaid
File disputes with the furnisher if the account was duplicated or mixed with another account
Send a goodwill letter if the account was paid and the charge-off is accurate
Wait for the charge-off to age off your credit report after the reporting period ends
Monitor all three credit reports for updates and corrections
Keep copies of all letters, dispute results, and supporting documents
