Stop shaving or waxing the area until it heals
Apply a warm compress for 10 to 15 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day
Gently exfoliate the skin with a soft washcloth or mild scrub
Wash the area with mild soap and water
Use a clean, sterilized needle or tweezers only if the hair tip is visible above the skin
Do not dig into the skin or squeeze the bump
Apply an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream if the area is inflamed
Use an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if the skin is broken
Wear loose clothing to reduce friction
Keep the area clean and dry
Seek medical care if the bump is very painful, swollen, infected, or keeps coming back
