See a licensed healthcare professional for IUD removal
Do not attempt to remove the IUD yourself
Schedule the removal during a routine gynecology visit if possible
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever before the appointment if approved by your clinician
Empty your bladder before the procedure
Lie back on the exam table as instructed
The clinician will insert a speculum to view the cervix
The clinician will locate the IUD strings
The clinician will gently pull the strings to remove the IUD
If the strings are not visible, the clinician may use special instruments or ultrasound guidance
Report severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever, or foul-smelling discharge after removal
Use another form of contraception if pregnancy is not desired after removal
