Turn off the light switch
Turn off the circuit breaker
Let the bulb cool completely
Place a stable ladder under the fixture
Grip the bulb firmly
Twist the bulb counterclockwise if it is a screw-in bulb
Pull the bulb straight down if it is a pin-base bulb
Remove any retaining spring or trim if needed
Use a suction cup or tape for hard-to-grip bulbs
Wear gloves if the bulb is hot, fragile, or stuck
Dispose of the bulb properly if it is broken or burned out
