Let the engine cool completely
Place a drain pan under the filter area
Wear gloves for a better grip
Try turning the filter counterclockwise by hand
Use an oil filter wrench or strap wrench
Wrap a coarse rubber strap around the filter for extra grip
Tap the filter wrench lightly to help it bite
Clean oil and debris from the filter surface
Use a screwdriver through the filter only as a last resort
Puncture the filter and turn it with a long screwdriver if needed
Use pliers only if the filter is already damaged
Apply penetrating oil around the filter seal if accessible
Check that the old gasket is not stuck to the engine
Avoid over-tightening the new filter during installation
Tighten the new filter by hand only
If it still will not move, stop and seek professional help
