Use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool
Put on gloves if available
Part the dog’s fur to expose the tick
Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible
Pull straight out with steady, even pressure
Do not twist, crush, or jerk the tick
Check that the entire tick is removed
Clean the bite area with antiseptic or soap and water
Place the tick in a sealed container or bag if you need to save it
Wash your hands thoroughly
Monitor the dog for redness, swelling, or illness
Contact a veterinarian if the mouthparts remain, the area becomes infected, or your dog seems unwell
Use a veterinarian-approved tick prevention product to help prevent future ticks
