Check eligibility to renew by mail (most renewals for adults are eligible if previous passport was issued when you were 16 or older, was not damaged, and was issued within the last 15 years)
Complete Form DS-82 (Renewal Application for U.S. Passport) if renewing by mail
Gather required documents:
Most recent U.S. passport (the one you are renewing)
One passport photo that meets requirements (unless using an exception)
Proof of name change (if applicable) such as a marriage certificate or court order
Any required supporting documents for special situations (if applicable)
Pay the required passport fees (check or money order payable to the “U.S. Department of State” or use the online payment method if available for your application type)
Submit your application by mail to the address listed in the DS-82 instructions or to the designated processing center
Track your application using the receipt number (if provided)
Check processing times and choose expedited service if available/eligible
If renewing in person, complete Form DS-11 (Application for a U.S. Passport) and submit at an acceptance facility if you are not eligible to renew by mail
For urgent travel, contact the National Passport Information Center and/or schedule an appointment for expedited service if eligible
