How to Replace an Electric Hot Water Heater?

Turn off power at the breaker

Verify power is off with a voltage tester

Shut off the cold water supply

Open a hot water faucet to relieve pressure

Attach a hose to the drain valve

Drain the tank completely

Disconnect the electrical wiring at the junction box

Label the wires before disconnecting

Disconnect the hot and cold water lines

Remove any straps, brackets, or mounting hardware

Move the old water heater out

Position the new water heater in place

Level the new water heater

Reconnect the water supply lines

Install new dielectric unions or fittings if needed

Reconnect the electrical wiring

Fill the tank by turning on the cold water supply

Keep a hot water faucet open until air is purged

Check all connections for leaks

Restore power only after the tank is full

Set the thermostat to the desired temperature

Test hot water operation

Dispose of the old water heater properly
