How to Replace an Electrical Outlet?

Turn off the power to the outlet at the breaker panel

Verify the power is off with a voltage tester

Remove the outlet cover plate

Unscrew the outlet from the electrical box

Pull the outlet out gently

Take a photo or note the wire connections

Loosen the terminal screws or release the back-wired connections

Disconnect the wires from the old outlet

Inspect the wires for damage or corrosion

Connect the wires to the new outlet

Attach the black or red wire to the brass screw

Attach the white wire to the silver screw

Attach the ground wire to the green screw

Tighten all connections securely

Fold the wires neatly back into the box

Screw the new outlet into place

Reinstall the cover plate

Turn the power back on at the breaker

Test the outlet for proper operation
