How to Replace CV Axle?

Park on a flat surface, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels

Loosen the axle nut before lifting the vehicle

Loosen the lug nuts

Raise the vehicle and support it securely with jack stands

Remove the wheel

Remove the axle nut completely

Remove any cotter pin, castle nut, or retaining hardware from the suspension components

Disconnect the lower ball joint, tie rod end, or strut bolts as needed for clearance

Push the CV axle inward through the hub

Remove the axle from the hub assembly

Pry the inner CV joint out of the transmission or differential

Drain transmission fluid if required

Remove the old axle from the vehicle

Compare the new axle to the old axle

Install a new axle seal if needed

Insert the inner CV joint into the transmission or differential

Push the axle fully into place until it seats

Guide the outer splines through the hub

Reconnect the suspension components

Reinstall any cotter pins or locking hardware

Install the axle nut by hand

Reinstall the wheel

Lower the vehicle enough to keep it stable

Torque the axle nut to specification

Torque the lug nuts to specification

Refill transmission fluid if any was lost

Test drive the vehicle

Recheck for leaks, noises, and proper axle seating
