Gather a screwdriver, replacement lock, tape measure, and any included screws
Open the door and keep it steady
Remove the screws from the interior lock plate or knob
Pull apart the interior and exterior lock components
Remove the latch from the door edge
Remove the strike plate from the door frame if replacing it
Compare the new lock with the old one for fit
Insert the new latch into the door edge
Secure the latch with screws
Install the exterior lock half through the door
Attach the interior lock half and align it with the exterior side
Tighten all mounting screws
Install the strike plate on the door frame
Test the key, knob, and deadbolt operation
Adjust alignment if the lock sticks or does not latch properly
Tighten all screws again after testing
