How to Replace Drum Brakes?
Park on a level surface, set the parking brake, and chock the wheels
Loosen the lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle
Raise the vehicle with a jack and support it securely on jack stands
Remove the wheel
Remove the brake drum
Remove the return springs, hold-down springs, adjuster, and parking brake cable if needed
Remove the old brake shoes and hardware
Inspect the wheel cylinder for leaks and replace if necessary
Inspect the brake drum for wear, scoring, or cracks and replace or machine if needed
Clean the backing plate and all contact points with brake cleaner
Apply a small amount of high-temperature brake grease to the shoe contact points on the backing plate
Install the new hardware kit
Install the new brake shoes
Reinstall the hold-down springs, return springs, adjuster, and parking brake cable
Adjust the brake shoes to the proper clearance
Reinstall the brake drum
Repeat the process on the other side
Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts
Lower the vehicle and torque the lug nuts to specification
Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the shoes
Test the brakes at low speed before normal driving
