How to Replace Drywall?

Turn off power to the work area

Remove baseboards, outlet covers, and wall fixtures

Score paint and caulk along seams and edges

Cut out damaged drywall with a utility knife

Remove drywall screws or nails

Pull off the damaged drywall pieces

Inspect and repair studs, wiring, or insulation

Measure the opening

Cut new drywall to size

Fit the drywall panel into place

Fasten the panel to studs with drywall screws

Tape the seams

Apply joint compound over tape and screw holes

Let the compound dry

Sand the surface smooth

Apply additional compound coats as needed

Sand again after each coat dries

Prime the repaired area

Paint to match the wall

Reinstall baseboards, covers, and fixtures
