Gather the new line, scissors, and the reel
Remove the old line from the reel
Open the bail on a spinning reel or prepare the spool on a baitcasting reel
Thread the line through the rod guides from the tip to the reel
Tie the line to the spool with an arbor knot or similar knot
Close the bail if using a spinning reel
Hold light tension on the line and begin reeling it onto the spool
Keep the line even and avoid twisting or overfilling
Stop when the line is about 1/8 inch below the spool rim
Cut the line and secure the end
Check that the line passes smoothly through all guides
Test the reel and rod before fishing
