How To Season A Cast Iron Skillet?

Wash the skillet with warm water and mild soap if needed

Scrub off any rust or old residue

Dry the skillet completely

Preheat the oven to 400–450°F

Apply a very thin layer of oil all over the skillet

Use a high-smoke-point oil such as flaxseed, vegetable, canola, or grapeseed oil

Wipe off all excess oil until the surface looks almost dry

Place the skillet upside down on the oven rack

Put foil or a baking sheet on the lower rack to catch drips

Bake for 1 hour

Turn off the oven and let the skillet cool inside

Repeat the oiling and baking process 2–3 times for a stronger seasoning

Use the skillet regularly to maintain the seasoning

Dry it immediately after washing

Rub a light coat of oil on it after each use
