Gather the vehicle title, current registration, and proof of insurance
Verify there are no liens on the vehicle or obtain a lien release
Complete the Texas title assignment on the back of the title
Fill out the Vehicle Transfer Notification with TxDMV within 30 days of sale
Remove the license plates from the vehicle
Remove the registration sticker from the windshield
Provide the buyer with the signed title, bill of sale, and any lien release
Record the buyer’s full name, address, and sale date
Keep a copy of all signed documents for your records
Cancel or transfer your insurance after the sale
If applicable, complete an odometer disclosure statement
If the vehicle is 10 model years old or newer, ensure the odometer disclosure is completed on the title or a separate form
If the title is lost, apply for a certified copy of the title before selling
Notify your county tax office if required for any local paperwork
Give the buyer any spare keys, manuals, and maintenance records
Report the sale price accurately for tax purposes
Ensure the buyer submits the title and registration application to the county tax office
Keep the license plates unless transferring them to another vehicle you own
