Attach the reel to the rod reel seat
Tighten the reel seat securely
Run the fishing line through each guide from the tip to the handle
Open the bail if using a spinning reel
Tie the line to the spool with an arbor knot
Close the bail and begin spooling line onto the reel
Fill the spool to the recommended level
Tie on a leader if needed
Attach the hook, lure, or bait
Add sinkers or floats if required
Check that all knots are tight
Test the rod and reel for smooth operation
