Attach the reel to the rod handle
Thread the fishing line through the rod guides
Open the bail or line roller on the reel
Tie the line to the reel spool or backing
Close the bail or secure the line on the spool
Wind the line onto the reel evenly
Add a leader if needed
Tie on a hook, lure, or bait rig
Check that all knots are tight
Test the line flow through the guides
Adjust drag settings on the reel
Make sure the rod sections are fully connected if it is a multi-piece rod
