Choose the correct line for your reel
Open the bail on a spinning reel or prepare the spool on a baitcasting reel
Run the line through the rod guides if using a spinning reel
Tie the line to the spool with an arbor knot or similar knot
Close the bail or secure the line to the spool
Apply slight tension to the line with your fingers or a cloth
Turn the reel handle to begin spooling
Keep the line coming off the supply spool in the same direction as it goes onto the reel
Fill the spool to about 1/8 inch below the rim
Stop spooling when the reel is properly filled
Cut the line and secure the tag end
Check for twists, loops, or uneven line lay
Adjust the line if needed before fishing
