Gather drywall joint compound, mud pan, taping knives, drywall tape, sanding sponge, and a mixing tool
Mix the mud until smooth and workable
Apply a thin layer of mud over the drywall seam or screw hole
Embed drywall tape into the wet mud on seams
Press the tape flat and remove excess mud
Cover the tape with a wider coat of mud
Feather the edges outward with a larger knife
Let the mud dry completely
Apply a second coat of mud, wider than the first
Let the second coat dry completely
Apply a third thin finishing coat if needed
Sand the dried mud smooth
Wipe away dust before priming and painting
