Drink a glass of cold water slowly
Hold your breath for 10–20 seconds, then exhale slowly
Swallow a spoonful of sugar or honey
Gargle with cold water for 30 seconds
Breathe slowly into a paper bag for 30–60 seconds
Pull your knees to your chest and hold for 20–30 seconds
Sip water through a straw slowly
Swallow several times in quick succession
Stimulate the back of the throat with a teaspoon of honey (carefully)
Avoid triggers like eating too fast, overeating, carbonation, and sudden temperature changes
If hiccups are related to reflux, avoid lying down after eating and consider antacids if appropriate
Seek medical care if hiccups last more than 48 hours, keep returning frequently, or come with chest pain, vomiting, trouble breathing, severe headache, or neurologic symptoms
