How to Survive a Rip Current?

Stay calm

Do not panic

Do not swim against the current

Swim parallel to the shore

Move sideways out of the current

Float or tread water if you cannot swim out

Signal for help

Call for lifeguard assistance if available

Swim back to shore at an angle once free

Save energy

If you are tired, stay afloat and wait for help

If caught with others, do not all try to swim directly back together

Use a flotation device if available

Follow lifeguard instructions

Avoid entering the water where rip currents are present

Check beach warning flags and signs before swimming
