Knit to the point where you want to change colors
Drop the old yarn, leaving a short tail
Pick up the new yarn
Leave a short tail of the new yarn
Knit the first stitch with the new yarn
Hold both tails securely for a few stitches
Continue knitting with the new color
Weave in the tails later to secure the join
