Gather joint compound, drywall tape, taping knife, mud pan, sanding sponge, utility knife, and primer
Make sure drywall sheets are securely fastened and screw heads are slightly recessed
Cut and fit drywall tape for all seams, inside corners, outside corners, and repair patches
Mix joint compound to a smooth, workable consistency
Apply a thin layer of mud over the seam or joint
Press tape into the wet mud
Smooth the tape flat with the taping knife
Cover the tape with a thin coat of mud
Fill all screw holes and dents with mud
Let the first coat dry completely
Apply a second wider coat of mud over seams and corners
Feather the edges of each coat outward
Let the second coat dry completely
Apply a third finishing coat if needed
Sand lightly between coats and after final drying
Keep sanding smooth and even without exposing tape
Remove dust before priming
Prime the repaired drywall before painting
